چکیده

The proper modeling of nonequilibrium gas dynamics is required in certain regimes of hypersonic flow. For inviscid flow this gives a system of conservation laws coupled with source terms representing the chemistry. Often a wide range of time scales is present in the problem, leading to numerical difficulties as in stiff systems of ordinary differential equations. Stability can be achieved by using implicit methods, but other numerical difficulties are observed. The behavior of typical numerical methods on a model advection equation with a parameter-dependent source term is studied. Two approaches to incorporate the source terms are utilized: MacCormack type predictor-corrector methods with flux limiters, and splitting methods in which the fluid dynamics and chemistry are handled in separate steps. Various comparisons over a wide range of parameter values are made. In the stiff case where the solution contains discontinuities, incorrect numerical propagation speeds are observed with all of the methods considered. This phenomenon is studied and explained.

Convergence of relaxation schemes for hyperbolic conservation laws with stiff source terms

We focus in this study on the convergence of a class of relaxation numerical schemes for hyperbolic scalar conservation laws including stiff source terms. Following Jin and Xin, we use as approximation of the scalar conservation law, a semi-linear hyperbolic system with a second stiff source term. This allows us to avoid the use of a Riemann solver in the construction of the numerical schemes. ...

On convergence of numerical schemes for hyperbolic conservation laws with stiff source terms

We deal in this study with the convergence of a class of numerical schemes for scalar conservation laws including stiff source terms. We suppose that the source term is dissipative but it is not necessarily a Lipschitzian function. The convergence of the approximate solution towards the entropy solution is established for first and second order accurate MUSCL and for splitting semi-implicit met...

The comparison of two high-order semi-discrete central schemes for solving hyperbolic conservation laws

This work presents two high-order, semi-discrete, central-upwind schemes for computing approximate solutions of 1D systems of conservation laws. We propose a central weighted essentially non-oscillatory (CWENO) reconstruction, also we apply a fourth-order reconstruction proposed by Peer et al., and afterwards, we combine these reconstructions with a semi-discrete central-upwind numerical flux ...

A discontinuous Galerkin method with Hancock-type time integration for hyperbolic systems with stiff relaxation source terms

A new discretization method for hyperbolic systems with stiff relaxation source terms (hyperbolic-relaxation equations) is introduced. The method is based on Huynh’s “upwind moment scheme” for hyperbolic conservation laws with implicit treatment of the source term. A Von Neumann analysis shows superiority in both stability and accuracy of the resulting fully discrete scheme over the method-of-l...

Numerical Methods for Hyperbolic Conservation Laws with Stiff Relaxation II. Higher-Order Godunov Methods

We present a higher order Godunov method for hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with stii, relaxing source terms. Our goal is to develop a Godunov method which produces higher order accurate solutions using time and space increments governed solely by the non-stii part of the system, i.e., without fully resolving the eeect of the stii source terms. We assume that the system satisses a cert...
